Could This Kickstarter Project About Chris Crocker Yield the Definitive Doc of the YouTube-Era?
In 2007, a 19-year-old from Tennessee named Chris Crocker used YouTube to defend a mildly disturbed pop star named Britney Spears. His efforts didn’t quite sway her detractors, but the gargantuan amount of attention he received for yelling, “Leave Britney Alone” proved that YouTube was a startup starmaker — and you only needed a camera and a computer to plug yourself into its intergalactic Jumbotron. Now, a new documentary called Me At the Zoo about the platinum-topped viral phenom needs Kickstarter cash to finish production. Could your investment be worth it? I love the idea of this movie. A patchwork of Internet clips and interstitial audio commentary? Sure, Kevin Macdonald and Ridley Scott’s recent documentary Life in a Day — composed entirely of user-submitted YouTube clips from around the world — poses as an au courant “film made by you,” but if we’re really going to chronicle the mania of YouTube, why not investigate the most memorable, incendiary figure in its history? The fact that Crocker’s story dovetails with the era of pop culture history in which he became popular is also ideal. When you think of Britney and her umbrella drama, you think of Chris Crocker. That’s an unprecedented type of connection in entertainment history, and it deserves a documentary. Other things I love about this movie, so far: 1. The title Me at the Zoo. It refers to the first video ever uploaded to YouTube, but we can safely say that Chris Crocker is his own species of commentator. 2. OK, there was a kickass VH1 show once called FanClub where superfans of bands showed off their freakish collections of memorabilia and gathered together to watch their idols in concert. I am still traumatized by an ABBA maniac who turned an entire treehouse into a meditation hut where he could stare at his massive ABBA collage, turn on ABBA Gold, and “concentrate on Frida’s voice.” The Britney collection in Crocker’s room reminds me of that. Which is fab. 3. The mysterious black and purple cloak/dress he’s wearing at 2:37. Like something Virginia Woolf’s Orlando would wear in a low-budget remake without Tilda Swinton. And with Chris Crocker. I’m rooting for this. Don’t leave him alone. · ‘Me at the Zoo’ [Kickstarter]

Disney Posts Strong Quarterly Results Despite Weakness in Film Studio
The Walt Disney Co. topped fiscal third-quarter earnings expectations by hauling in 77 cents per share, a 15 percent improvement over last year and 4 cents better than analysts had predicted, but the announcement Tuesday didn't help the stock.> Revenue also topped expectations, coming in at $10.7 billion, up 7 percent. Net income was $1.5 billion, up 8 percent. Chief executive Robert Iger credited the company's media networks, especially ESPN, along with parks and resorts and consumer products for the strong results, though not studio entertainment, which was responsible for the bulk of a $34 million impairment charge. Of Disney's five segments, only studio entertainment posted lower revenue this quarter compared with the same quarter last year. Revenue fell 1 percent to $1.62 billion, and operating income at the studio plunged 60 percent to $49 million. Cars 2 and Thor had tough comparisons with last year's Toy Story 3 an Iron Man 2, but Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides offset much of the damage. Disney shares were rising 2 percent in after-hours trading shortly after the earnings report, but fell to negative 1 percent during the company's conference call with analysts. Disney shares, which had been up 9 percent on the year as recently as last month, have taken a nosedive along with the rest of the market. In August alone, the stock has plunged 10 percent. On Tuesday during regular trading, though, the shares gained 5 percent to $34.70 on a strong market rebound, though the stock remains down 8 percent on the year. Iger said Tuesday that the violent swings -- mostly to the downside -- on Wall Street nowadays hasn't affected Disney's business, and he doesn't expect that they will. "We remain well-positioned for whatever economic conditions we face in the future," he said. Iger seemed most enthusiastic Tuesday about ESPN, which he said attracts an audience of 107 million each week when you add up TV, radio and the Web site. He said ESPN and Disney will remain "diligent" when bidding for sports rights. ESPN is part of media networks, which was again Disney's largest sgment, reporting $4.9 billion in revenue and $2.1 billion in operating income, up 5 percent and 11 percent, respectively. Iger also boasted of a 24 percent ratings surge at Disney XD, and praised the recently aired Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension, a TV movie based on the hit animated show Phineas and Ferb, as a "phenomenal success." The movie is the No. 1 scripted telecast so far this year among kids 6-11. All of the growth in media networks was attributed to cable networks, where revenue gained 7 percent to $3.5 billion. In broadcasting, revenue fell 1 percent to $1.43 billion. Parks and resorts, Disney's second largest segment, posted revenue growth of 12 percent to $3.2 billion, with kudos going to the domestic parks, the ocean-cruise business and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. On the other hand, Disneyland Paris disappointed, as did Tokyo Disney Resort, the latter due to the March earthquake. Revenue at consumer products grew 13 percent to $685 million thanks to toys associated with Cars 2 and Marvel superheroes. Interactive media, the only segment to show an operating loss, grew its revenue 27 percent to $251 million. Uncle Vanya
A Kennedy Center presentation of a Sydney Theater Company production of a play in two acts by Anton Chekhov, adapted by Andrew Upton. Yes, it works -- does it ever -- in this sublime revival of the Chekhov classic by the Sydney Theater Company. Two years after their successful visit to D.C. and New York with "A Streetcar Named Desire," Cate Blanchett and colleagues impress again in an exclusive three-week stop at the Kennedy Center. There are no weaknesses in this lively and penetrating production that benefits from a talented ensemble, a frank new adaptation by Andrew Upton and a nuanced interpretation by Hungarian director Tamas Ascher, a renowned Chekhov scholar. Upton, co-artistic director of the Sydney troupe with his wife Blanchett, offers a plain-spoken version of Chekhov's thesis on futility. Ascher helms an insightful and energetic ride, coaxing sensitive portrayals of Chekhov's stoic achievers and one famously shameless narcissist. The tear-filled tableau is embellished with adroit use of comedy, some of it slapstick that in lesser hands would surely cheapen the experience. Blanchett delivers a compelling performance as the exquisite and self-obsessed Yelena, who sets hearts aflutter while coping with boredom and lamenting her tiresome marriage to the overbearing professor (a suitably pompous John Bell). Playing both victim and vixen with her two admirers, a nimble Blanchett lounges seductively around set designer Zsolt Khell's spartan estate. She also looks terrific, especially in her slinky red dress, matching shoes and pearls by costume designer Gyorgyi Szakacs. Another razor-sharp performance is turned in by Hayley McElhinney as Sonya, the estate's tireless plain Jane whose dreams for love are thwarted by the comely visitor and whose misspent life is defined by the experience. The role is delivered with aching sincerity; perhaps the production's most delightful scene is Sonya and Yelena's giddy interplay over their mutual interests while giggling on the floor like school girls. Richard Roxburgh's Vanya is riveting as he teeters on the edge of despair, a frustrated servant flailing and ruminating over his wasted life, the incompetent professor and his missed opportunity with the lovely Yelena. All personal pride is willingly discarded as the lovesick buffoon invites rejection, and when the character finally snaps in act three, it's like watching a volcano erupt. Hugo Weaving fashions a carefully textured performance as the confident but hopelessly smitten Dr. Astrov. The free-spirited character, who commutes to the estate on his motorcycle, is intensely focused on his interests but blind to Sonia's affections. Yet all pretensions are lost when he suddenly falls out the window after too many vodkas -- a bit of business that perfectly captures Ascher's refreshing and unforgettable production.Sets, Zsolt Khell; costumes, Gyorgyi Szakacs; lighting, Nick Schlieper; music/sound, Paul Charlier.
